What Is Platinum?
Platinum is a precious metal used in electronics, automotive parts, medical devices, and jewelry, among other applications. Its name derives from the Spanish word platina — meaning ‘little silver’ — and reflects its initial European discovery following the colonization of the new world.
Platinum is similar to palladium in many ways, but far rarer. Today, only two sites mine it on a commercial scale, located in South Africa and the Ural Mountains. Even in these facilities, it is often necessary to extract more than 10 tons of material to produce a single ounce of platinum.
Platinum Maple Leaf Coins
The Royal Canadian Mint produced its first Platinum Maple Leaf coin in 1988. Though initially minted in a variety of denominations and sizes, a one-ounce, $50 version has been the standard since 2009. As of 2017, this is the country's only official platinum bullion. It features 9995 pure platinum with the iconic maple leaf design on the obverse and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt in 2003 on the reverse face.
The Platinum Maple Leaf was the world’s best-selling platinum bullion coin in 2012. Today, it remains a popular choice for both investors and collectors. Like other Royal Canadian Mint bullion products, the most recent Platinum Maple Leaf coins include several advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and protect your investment.
