Early British Gold Sovereign Coins
British Gold Sovereigns are undoubtedly one of the best-known gold coins in the world. Their roots date back to the 15th century, when Henry VII named them as the official bullion coin of the Kingdom of England. These early Sovereigns were minted from a half troy ounce of 23 karat gold and had a nominal value of one shilling, though no numbers were listed on the face. Later Sovereigns from this period had a fixed gold content of 0.2354 troy ounces per coin, a change which made them more durable and longer lasting.
19th Century British Gold Sovereign Coins
The British Gold Sovereign was reintroduced into circulation in 1817 by King George III. The King commissioned Benedetto Pistrucci to create the reverse image of Saint George and the dragon, which remains in use today. Though some design changes have occurred over the years, the standard dragon and shield Sovereign has been relatively consistent from 1871 onwards. The obverse of the coin has celebrated four monarchs:
- Queen Victoria, until 1901
- Edward VII, from 1901 to 1910
- George V, from 1910 to 1936
- Elizabeth II, from 1952 to present
All of the above British gold Sovereign coins can still be found in uncirculated condition today, though some years and designs are more sought-after than others.
