• French Napoleons

  French Napoleons are a 20-Franc coin made from .900 fine gold. They were released initially during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte (1804-1814), and later during that of his nephew, Napoleon III. Gold Napoleons were issued up until the end of Napoleon III’s emperorship, which coincided with France’s 1871 defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. The ensuing political and economic turmoil led many investors to stockpile gold bullion. As a result, certain Gold Napoleons, despite their age, are relatively easy to find on the collectors’ market today.

• French Angels

  Compared to Napoleons, French Angels are among the rarer coins available for sale in our online store. They were minted between 1871 and 1898, and feature Augustine Dupré’s “guardian angel” design, which dates back to the French Revolution. Well into the 20th century, angel coins were considered to bring good luck and most famously, they were carried almost religiously by French fighter pilots in the First World War.

• French Roosters

  France initially minted Gold Roosters in either 1899 or 1901, reports vary, and some earlier examples have been identified, and remained in production until the start of the First World War. They feature a highly stylized design, with the obverse depicting Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic. On the reverse is the Gallic Rooster which gives the coin its name. Roosters have a face value of 20 Francs and are made from .1867 troy ounces of 90% pure gold, roughly between 20 and 22 karats today.
